Pure goosebumps: experience the Taj Mahal

Big words describe the Taj Mahal: "Tear on the cheek of eternity" wrote the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. The British writer Rudyard Kippling described the building as "the embodiment of everything pure". And the builder, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, saw "the sun and moon weep at the sight".

Called the Monument of Eternal Love by many, the Taj Mahal is a timeless landmark. I visited the Taj Mahal many years ago - and it took my breath away. I would like to experience the beautiful building again someday. Is the Taj Mahal also on your dream travel list? Then hopefully you will find some helpful tips here:

Arrival and travel time to the Taj Mahal

Agra is located about 215 kilometers southeast of India's capital Delhi on the Yamuna River, one of India's seven sacred rivers. Around 1.7 million people live in Agra. Every year, crowds of foreigners and locals flock to the north Indian city. The reason for this is the Taj Mahal, which translated means something like crown palace or crown of the palace. The people of Agra live with and from the Taj Mahal. About eight million tourists want to see the Taj Mahal annually.

It goes without saying that the city - especially Taj Ganj, the urban area that surrounds the Taj Mahal - is very touristy. The downside is clearly the hordes of souvenir sellers, rickshaw wallahs, smugglers, self-appointed tourist guides, etc. “Have a look, Madam. Come to my shop. Just one look, madam. Tuk tuk? You need hotel? You want jewelry? "Etc. it kept ringing in my ears. It is best to switch to draft, even if this is really difficult in Agra.

Travel report India Taj Mahal Agra - travel blog BravebirdThe best months to travel to Agra , which is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, are January to March and October to December. It gets really hot - sometimes 45 ° C - from April to June. In July and August it is also hot, plus a lot of rain.

To get to Agra you can either travel by bus, train, or book a driver (I can recommend Ashok , who I took from Rishikesh to Delhi in 2018). There are several daily train connections from Delhi to Agra. I started the train in Delhi around 6am and was in Agra around 9am. However, that was a few years ago. The train connections are available online, so it is better to check the exact times.

Otherwise, in my experience, the hotels, hotels and guest houses are happy to help - also with reservations on the trains. The express trains from Delhi to Agra only take around 2 hours, so you can get to Agra in the morning and back to Delhi in the evening if you only want to do a day trip. You can also get to Agra easily by bus. Buses stop at either Idgah Bus Terminal or Interstate Bus Terminmal.

Opening times and admission prices

The Taj Mahal is open every day except Fridays from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Entry costs 1,100 rupees (just under 14 euros / December 2018) for foreigners. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. Only the believers who want to take part in the prayer in the mosque are admitted.

Taj Mahal view from the Red Fort India - Bravebird travel blog

VIEW TO THE TAJ MAHAL FROM THE RED FORT

In front of all three entrance gates (west, south and east) there are guides who - usually very time-saving, jostling is the order of the day - get tickets and bring you to the outer courtyard. I was traveling with a guide, which I would do again and again. He was able to tell me a lot about the Taj Mahal and show me great photo perspectives. If you want to visit the Taj Mahal without a guide, you will be addressed again and again inside. They'll be happy to show you the photo hotspots for a tip.

Before you can see the Taj Mahal live for the first time, you stand in front of an entrance building made of red stone. As soon as you go through it, the Taj Mahal gradually comes into your field of vision. An unforgettable moment! I can remember getting goosebumps because the building is beautiful in my eyes and there is a very special atmosphere there despite the many people.

Visiting the Taj Mahal is very popular at sunrise and sunset. At the latest when the sun rises or sets, the Taj Mahal enchants its visitors. When the moon is full, access to the Taj Mahal is possible for five nights. To control and limit admission, special tickets are available from the office of the Archaeological Survey of India . Unfortunately, my visit to the Taj Mahal did not coincide with the nights of the full moon. I would have liked to have seen a full moon night there. But even so, the visit was an unforgettable experience.
